Ashville NC City Council To Decide Upon LED Street Lights At Tuesday MeetingPublished by: Samantha Walton (3/8/2011) |
Asheville, NC – With mixed reactions already, the local city council will be voting on tonight’s consent agenda that includes the decision whether to pass plans to install up to 900 LED street lights. This plan is projected to reduce the annual light bill by 60%.The consent agenda is made up of those decisions that are most likely to pass without much resistance. However, it seems many locals are battling the city’s decision to use federal stimulus money to fund this green initiative. Some bloggers have responded to articles saying that this stimulus should be returned to its rightful owners—presumably the local citizens and taxpayers. Others say that it’s irresponsible to change perfectly good lights, and the LED bulbs should simply be used as replacements for when the older bulbs die. The replacement LED bulbs are made by BetaLED of Sturtevant, Wis. The bulbs themselves cost $290,000 and the installation will cost $3 million. However, the current lights cost $1.7 million in bills and the new bulbs will be $600,000 less. At this rate it will be five years before the city makes a return on investment. This will be the largest energy efficient lighting installation in all of North Carolina. If interested in saving money on light bills or other utilities, contact Dr. Energy Saver Charlotte.
