Flooded Basement Woes

Published by: Francine Maglione (10/6/08)
Basement flooding can cause many problems for homeowners. Your basement can flood if your area experiences continuous rain and the ground becomes overly saturated. A flooded basement can be an expensive, complicated and messy problem to fix, especially if you're forced to deal with it on a regular basis.

The Institute for Business and Home Safety suggests monitoring when and where your basement floods (during a certain season, through the same wall or multiple walls, etc.) to determine the proper course of action. For example, perhaps you find a flooded basement in the spring when snow melts, or maybe your basement only floods in one spot near the top of the wall due to an improperly sloped landscape.

If an entire wall is damp or water is entering through several walls, it could mean you have a faulty/missing waterproofing membrane around your foundation. There could be many reasons behind basement flooding, but the key is to find a solution that will prevent your basement from flooding over and over again.

The Federal Emergency Management agency (FEMA) recommends a number of steps to take for a flooded basement:

  • Purchase sump pumps and battery backup sump pump systems to keep water out of the basement.
  • Purchase and install basement drains.
  • Install gutters, drain spouts, and/or extensions to help rainwater drain away from the home's foundation.

The work involved in fixing a flooded basement can be extensive, so it's best to hire a professional basement contractor to take care of the work for you. Basement Systems can handle all aspects of your flooded basement and make sure your basement stays dry in the future.

For basement flooding problems, try our TripleSafe Sump Pump that has a backup system and a battery-powered pump in case the power goes out. Our WaterGuard basement waterproofing system will help keep your basement dry, and we can also help with your basement walls, floor and windows.
