Rain, Rain, Go Away

And for Chris Schmidt a rainy day is a busy day.

The phones started ringing at Schmidt's Island Basement Systems office a half hour before opening on Wednesday. Extra hands were called in and then it was a matter of accommodating the onslaught.

"There's some hefty leaks," he said, before racing off to fix a "geyser" spouting in a crawl space.

The added workload was expected.

With snow melting and a continuing downpour it was only a matter of time, said Ramona De Vane, marketing co-ordinator for Schmidt's basement and crawl space waterproofing company. Today a lot of the calls are from Fernwood and Fairfield.

"We wait for it," she said, of the hectic calls for assistance.

Schmidt and others in his business are likely to be kept on their feet for a while.
