Conditioning your Crawlspace
To vent or not to vent? That is the question--when considering whether or not to condition your crawlspace.
Conditioned crawlspaces can (after completion) be considered a "part of the house" and not just a scary dirt patch underneath the house where mice and grasshoppers live. Think of them as mini-basements.
The ideal conditioned crawlspace is one in which vapor barrier is laid out over the crawlspace soil, run up perimiter walls and attatched to piers or columns with tape or caulk. This helps keep moisture and pests out (as well as making the crawlspace a more storage-friendly part of the house). In order to keep moisture and humidity levels within a safe acceptable range a stand-alone dehumidifer should b instaled in the crawlspace and all exterior vents must be sealed. This will help retard mold growth and keep the space within a controlled humidity range.
