Moisture Control and Your Texas Crawlspace
Euless, TX - The health of your crawl space can determine the health of your entire home. Crawl spaces can sag, sink and be filled with allergenic elements, which will reflect on your home and your health.
Moisture in your crawl space means:
- Mold
- Increased heating and cooling bills
- Dust Mites
Mold’s job is to eat non-living, wet, organic material like the wood in your crawl space that holds your house together. Another negative effect of mold is that it creates household allergies. As mold grows it releases spores which then float and find more places to grow. As more mold populates your home, the greater the percentage of people that will have allergic reactions to it.
When you have a moist crawl space you can be paying more to heat and cool your house throughout the year. This is because damp air requires more energy to heat and cool. If you get rid of the humidity you could be saving yourself anywhere from 15% to 25% to heat and cool your home!
Dust Mites are also a prevalent problem in crawl spaces and homes with a moisture problem. Dust Mites are the number one allergen that people with asthma and allergies react to. The reason dust mites are attracted to a moist crawl space is not because they drink water, but because they absorb it from the air. This means that your moist crawl space is the ideal place for them to set up camp.
To solve these problems you need to eradicate the moisture from your crawl space. Three keys to keeping your crawl space dry are:
- Crawl space encapsulation
- Vent covers
- Sump pumps
The most effective way to keep moisture out of your crawl space is by installing a crawl space encapsulation system. A crawl space encapsulation system will completely seal your crawl space and isolate it from the ground and the humid air outside. It can effectively create a space that is protected from mold, radon, and insects.
Another way to keep moisture out of your crawl space is to simply apply vent covers. Vents let in outside, unconditioned air and sometimes even water. When this air enters the vents it works its way up into your entire home through joints in floorboards, space around access hatches, through duct chases and holes around wires and pipes. Vent covers will stop unwanted outside air from entering your crawl space, while also retaining your home’s air conditioning and heat during colder months.
The sump pump tends to be one of the best options to fight water in a crawl space. Sump pumps will suck up any water around the system and then pump it out away from the perimeter of your house. When all three of these solutions are combined, there is greater potential to have a moisture free crawl space. This means that your crawl space will also be protected from mold, dust mites and extreme heating and cooling bills.
