Sump pump runs a lot (too much)

I have a super sump installed with the battery backup. My problem is that the pump runs a lot, typically it kicks on once every couple of minutes or so. Our basement is finished and while no damage has been done, I am fearful that the pump motor will burn out prematurely and flood my entire basement. I had heard that a stream was diverted to build the houses in my area, so there may be some underground water may be present. Any help or advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.
