I have a moisture problem in my basement. Calgary has had a lot of rain this year and the water table is very high. Because of this we have noticed some moisture in our basement. Not actual water puddling anywhere, but moisture along the bottom of the basement and some sulphate stains. We have a poured concrete basement. We also have one crack that shows moisture. The strangest thing though is the moisture that we have in sporardic areas of the basement where there are slits. We were told these are slits are called 'snap ties'!? They are just small slits in the concrete. Why is there moisture coming in from these slits and how do we fix the probelm?

Thanks,
Kim.

The snap ties are the location of the ties that hold the forms together when the puor the concrete walls. After the walls are poured the forms are removed and the ties remain in the wall. This can sometimes be a path for moisture to follow from the exterior to the inside of the wall. Sometimes they can be patched or sealed from the inside to help stop the moisture.
