View Full Version : New construction - want to be proactive

I'm about to break ground for a new shop for my woodworking business. The shop is scheduled to be built over a block-wall dirt crawl space. As per code, there are vents specified every 6' on each wall in this 40' x 60' structure.

The gentleman that starts excavating the site tomorrow handed me a copy of your 'Dirt Crawl Spaces' book this morning, simply saying "You should read this before you start construction...".

Well, after the inital scare that the book gave me, I realized the information it contains makes complete sense and is something I need to take into consideration before the first block is laid.

Given that construction has not begun, what suggestions would you have for me moving forward?

I'm thinking I need to pay attention to carefully sealing the sill plate at the top of the block wall, install a liner, and perhaps most importantly, omit the (many) planned vents.

Also, given that I will need access to the crawl space for installation and maintenance of ductwork for the dust collection system, how would you suggect I provide this access? A normal (short) door in one of the walls would appear to defeat the whole sealing process of the crawl space.

Thanks in advance...

Marty,
I am glad that you enjoyed the book.
Vents are bad for wooden structures. There is no scientific basis for having vents in the first place. There are not vents in basements, then why would anyone spec vents in crawl spaces?
Tou can have a crawl space door in the foundation wall, providing it is sealed, airtight.

Thanks for responding...

Your book made it perfectly clear that venting the crawl space is NOT something I want to do. So I will be eliminating all the spec'ed vents.

An air-tight half door in the crawl space presents an interesting challenge. I'm not sure I can purchase such a beast, with suitable weatherstripping/etc.

What are your thoughts on providing the required access from within the structure? Would a trap-door in the floor be self-defeating? I recall such an arrangement being mentioned in your book when required for combustible equipment in the crawl-space. (I returned your book, or I'd quote from it...)

I'll look into a local dealer who can hopefully provide me with pricing and installation details on your liner system.

Thanks again...

Hi,
Access can be accomplished through the floor system, and through the foundation wall. I have seen many cases where there have been two access areas depending on the size of the structure. Normally there will be two access panels in opposite parts of the structure.
Thank you.
