Our house is an old war-built house (about 60 years old), but we love the neighbourhood. We were thinking of doing a big renovation, including adding an extension to the back of the house - the kitchen and basement needing the most work. When we started pulling out some of the ugly panelling in the basement, we saw water discolouration and mildew on the drywall underneath. We had someone come take a look at it, and he said there are several cracks and honeycombing on each wall that need to be repaired; plus he said to waterproof the basement we would have to install weeping tile to the outside of the basement and install a sump-pump, all of which would probably run about $10,000.00 or more! Your internal weeping tile wouldn't involve tearing up our yard, but how would the foundation of our home be protected from further water and ice damage? As I said, we don't want to move; but would it be worthwhile to do all this work to the basement plus do the additional work we were thinking of, or would it be more cost-effective to just tear down the house and rebuild? NOTE: Our house is only about 25' by 25', so one way or another, we HAVE to make it bigger.
