sticky floor

I have a 85 year old 2 story. I was getting the carpet replaced downstairs. When the old stuff was removed there I found a "sticky" like maple syrup substance running from one corner, down the tack strip, under a pocket door, and continuing down to the base of the stairs. I cannot find where it came from. There is no evidence of water coming in from outside, I am baffled and so is the floor guy. Any ideas? thanks

Sorry i can't help with this one. The only thing I can think of is that might be carpet glue or something like that.
