Basement & Crawl Space Glossary

Efflorescence

A foundation is made of porous concrete walls with a concrete floor.  Because concrete is porous, it easily allows water to pass through in the form of vapor as hydrostatic pressure presses on the walls.  Additionally, water will leak through any basement wall cracks and also through the basement wall floor joist.  This water and water vapor enters the basement or crawl space area and adds to its humidity levels.  As moisture from the earth makes its way through and evaporates, it deposits mineral substances behind.  These mineral substances leave a white, flaky residue on the basement walls that builds up over time and ruins the appearance of the basement walls.

If you see efflorescence on your basement walls, take it as a major red flag of a serious problem in your basement area.  Humidity in a basement will allow mold and dust mites to thrive, and even a small basement leak can turn into a major water problem over time or with a large storm.  Be sure to respond to the problem right away with a Free Estimate from Basement Systems to make sure that the problem isn't one that could develop into something serious in the long run.
