Basement Finishing

What is Basement Finishing?

Creating living space in a basement is called basement finishing and usually involves installing walls, flooring, a ceiling, windows, and fixtures. Basement finishing is generally a faster, less expensive way to increase the livable square footage of a house compared to building an addition. At 50% or less of the cost of building an addition and without the disadvantages of losing valuable yard space, basement finishing is a popular way to quickly and easily upgrade a home to make addition space. Depending on the size of the house, a finished basement may include a multi-purpose space such as a family room or special-purpose rooms like a home gym or a bedroom apartment.

Other terms for basement finishing

Basement finishing is also called basement remodeling or basement renovating. If a basement has been finished once and needs an overhaul, that may be referred to as basement refinishing.

Basement finishing elements

Most basement remodeling project include these components:

  • Basement walls should be well insulated, especially in cold climates, durable, waterproof, and attractive.
  • Basement flooring should add warmth, comfort, and be water-resistant.
  • Basement windows should be energy efficient and add as much natural light as possible. Rusty basement windows and window wells should be replaced to prevent leaks.
