Tainted Drywall Warning |
For the past couple of months, news outlets have been buzzing with stories of homeowners in southern states including Florida, Louisiana and Alabama that are feeling the negative effects of tainted drywall in their homes.
After tremendous flooding from hurricanes in 2005 and 2006 made the need for drywall in the south skyrocket, contractors began importing drywall from China to build and repair homes with. This drywall has been found to be inferior, however, and has caused a host of problems for homeowners.

Healthy Crawl Spaces |
|
There is an old-fashioned belief still supported by some building codes and general contractors across the U.S. concerning crawl spaces. The belief that crawl spaces should be vented is greatly contributing to the problem of damp, moldy and decaying crawl spaces becoming a true housing epidemic.
According to this belief, crawl spaces need to be protected from ground moisture by the way of a ground vapor barrier (usually a 6 mil plastic sheet) and should be allowed to "breath" through open vents. This belief says that open vents will dry out the space by allowing outside air to circulate within the crawl space.

Mold Troubles |
Mold is a bothersome little problem that can appear anywhere in your home. Mold spores are invisible to the naked eye, but once water comes into the picture they can grow into potentially toxic substances. If you have mold growing in your home, your best bet is to have a mold remediation specialist remove it so that no one in your family has to deal with allergies.
The Environmental Protection Agency writes that mold begins as spores flying through the air. Mold can easily enter homes this way and if there are any spots with water in your home, the mold spores can begin to grow in the water.
