Rodent Control in Crawl Spaces
A crawl space makes an inviting home for rodents, such as mice and rats, as well as many other pests. This poses numerous problems for homeowners. Rodents contaminate food and can make people sick. They leave urine and fecal droppings that contain germs and cause allergic reactions in some people. Even worse, rodents can cause house fires by gnawing on wires.

Rodents are attracted to crawl spaces because they are warm, damp, and protected from the elements. In addition, they are typically near food supplies (such as trash), and are not usually monitored frequently by homeowners. Crawl spaces supply plenty of entry points for pests, including gaps between the foundation and framing, spaces under doors, penetrations for wires and pipes, vents, and tunnels through dirt floors.

- Do not store food in your crawl space Rodents will chew through a wooden cabinet to get to food.
- Eliminate sources of water and lower humidity Rodents, many insects, and mold and fungi prefer areas with high humidity
- Seal all cracks and openings Many pests follow the path of least resistance. Don’t make it easy for them to get into your home!
- Add a barrier to dirt floor crawl spaces. A thin slab, commonly called a rat slab, is commonly used to stop rodents from tunneling into your crawl space.
- Keep a trap in your crawl space. Set and bait it when you find evidence of rodent activity.
- Keeping a cat on patrol will also help!

If rodents are present, an exterminator is called in to eliminate them before the work begins. A crawl space waterproofing system, if necessary, is installed prior to encapsulation as well.

The water has been “turned off” thanks to waterproofing and dehumidification, deterring rodents that prefer damp conditions. Pest entryways, such as gaps and holes, are carefully sealed with spray foam insulation. Ill-fitting vent covers and hatchway doors are replaced with air-tight vent covers and hatchways. Finally, CleanSpace® crawl spaces are easier to monitor for rodent activity. If a rodent does manage to gain entry, it will be easier to spot the evidence and set a trap.
