This Herndon, VA home had a need for crawl space improvement. Improved insulation and sealing the crawl space off from unconditioned outdoor air was the solution identified by our sales pro who inspected the home. The production crew removed the old ineffective insulation. After that, they applied spray foam insulation to the rim joists to help make sure that the rooms above the crawlspace were able to maintain a normal temperature. Finally, the crew installed spray foam on the crawlspace walls as the primary form of insulation to keep the home comfortable year-round.
We turned this nasty crawl space into a clean space with controlled air flow and better impact on the energy efficiency of the home. Removing the old insulation attached to the crawl space ceiling, clearing the plastic on the floors and then installing a moisture barrier and Clean Space to seal it all in made this crawl space have better air quality and allow for use of the space if storage is needed by the homeowners. The foundation supports of the home were air sealed to keep moisture below and the rim joists of the home were sealed with spray Foam.
This home in Stafford Virginia had a wet and cold crawl space. The extra humidity lead to areas with mold growth and the existing insulation had become home to some unwanted pests. The old insulation was falling in section making the floors above cold and a lack of air sealing was allowing nasty, musty air to leak into the home and rooms above. Our Certified Home Performance Sales Pro Jaron visited to perform a free inspection and was able to design a project to help. Here is what it looked like before and after our team was able to transform the crawl space with a vapor barrier, ground insulation, closed off vents and air sealed rim joists.
Our service technician Brent Bevens visited this Clifton VA home for annual follow up service on a crawl space to check on the sump pump we installed last year. He removed the unit from its base/liner to clean and test it. Here is a nice visual of the before and after. Sump pumps by nature can get dirty and potentially clogged from sediment and dirt in the water they pump out of a home which makes our annual service all the more valuable.
This Clifton VA crawl space originally had gravel floors with black plastic materials covering it in an effort to "manage" the moisture and wetness in the space. Traditional methods like that do not really work and can often create more problems than it eliminates. Plastic material, covering cold, wet floors can actually trap moisture below and add to the musty, mildew heavy smells in the space and promote poor air quality in the home above. Our production team began this transformation by covering the gravel with the brown drainage liner shown in the "before" photo. This keeps moisture and air below the eventually sealed floor covering and allows air to move and help the moisture evaporate. Clean Space was later used across the entire surface and up the crawl space walls.
