These wall anchors were installed in a different manner than you might be used to seeing. Normally the basement walls are bowing in and we dig holes in the yard to install the earth plates. In this case, the wall was bowing out into the backyard. This wall is a retaining wall that supports a garage above. We cut open the garage floor and dug down inside it to get the earth anchor plates installed. The wall anchor plates that normally line the inside of the basement walls are now on the outside. The homeowner was quite happy that we were able to save his wall, and in a timely fashion.
Large cracks in the basement wall are a sign that the wall is failing and could possibly cave in. A basement wall is mainly held in place by straight up and down pressure, so when that wall is straight it works. As soon as the wall starts to bow inward, it loses strength. Some walls take forever to get really bad, while other break and fall apart very quickly. There is no way of telling if the wall will ever fall in, but why take that chance? Getting it fixed now will save a lot of money in the long run. It also makes it easier to sell the home if you can pass on a huge warranty to the new owners.
