In the Pacific Northwest Radon is a huge concern. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the soil beneath our homes. Over time, uranium and radium break down in the soil and that is what releases the Radon gas. Luckily, at John's Waterproofing we offer testing kits and mitigation systems so that homeowners are protected from constantly breathing in Radon gas. According to the EPA, it is recommended to get a mitigation system if the PCI level is over 4.0. We start by drilling a hole in the lowest point of the home so that a PVC pipe can reach 2 feet down into the soil. This pipe then connects to a fan that gets installed outside the home to pull out Radon gas from the soil. It can then release the gas up into the atmosphere above the house so that its occupants aren't at risk of inhaling it. Radon is able to get into the home through cracks or breaks in the foundation and that is why having the Radon mitigation system working to pull the gas out of the soil underneath your home is so important.
